'A Space for Change: Partner Perspectives on an Effective Multilateral System' | Launch Event during UNGA

The need for an effective multilateral system has never been more important to address the nature and scale of today’s global challenges, from record numbers of displaced persons to era-defining pandemics. Enhancing the effectiveness of the multilateral system requires behaviour change by both development partners that fund multilateral organisations, but also by multilateral organisations themselves.

Whilst the system proves to be effective, effectiveness strictly depends on how partners support it. In this vein, the GPEDC has undertaken a substantive analytical work across different types of partners to promote mutual learning and to contribute to the global discourse on what an effective multilateral system should look like.

The GPEDC is organising a virtual side-event in the margin of UNGA to launch the new GPEDC report 'A Space for Change: Partner Perspectives on an Effective Multilateral System' and contribute to the global discourse on how an effective multilateral system should look like and what partners can do to support it, framed through the lens of the effectiveness principles.

Starting by defining the concept of 'effective donorship', based on existing literature, and through a series of interviews held with the broader range of effective development co-operation stakeholders (representatives of MDBs, CSOs, partner countries, bilateral donors, parliaments, among others), this report seek to identify key partners' perspectives and expectations on how the multilateral system can serve as a more effective partner to collectively build more resilient and sustainable solutions as we inch closer to the 2030 Agenda deadline, with a focus on:

  1. Why do donors commit to effective donorship and how they execute it and
  2. What is the added value of working with the multilateral system and how it can help to better align with the effectiveness principles.
