This presentation was given by Shari Bryan of NDI at a conference on post-conflict reconstruction in Brussels. Bryan discusses the critical roles political parties play in these situations: representing interests, aggregating preferences and forming governments, but also managing conflict and promoting peace and stability. This paper discusses how NDI has sought to support the growth of political parties, how this has assisted democratic development worldwide and what lessons can be drawn from these experiences.
